When you think of Mauritius, pristine beaches, clear blue ocean and luxury resorts come to mind. This is of course the main draw to Mauritius! There is an alternative side to Mauritius though which is equally as beautiful. Georgia was lucky enough to experience this whilst staying at Lakaz Chamarel.
Lakaz Chamarel is a boutique eco lodge in south-west Mauritius. This part of the island has dramatic landscapes with mountainous views, rainforests, waterfalls and many hiking trails. Lakaz Chamarel is located up in the lush hills of Chamarel village. Upon arriving at the gates to the lodge I drove down a winding road encased by lush forest to the main reception area which sits in front of a large pond teaming with birdlife. I was greeted with a warm welcome and a delicious sugarcane fruit cocktail. These particular drinks are very common in Mauritius as there are sugar cane fields everywhere!
As the rooms are very private and far apart it is advised to take the buggy ride up to your room, which allows you to take in the beauty of the surroundings at a different perspective. I was staying in the Garden Pool Suite that looks onto the tropical gardens and has the added bonus of a private pool. It’s perfect for honeymooners who want some privacy.
There are 20 rooms at Lakaz Chamarel and they are all separate units located in the gardens so you feel fabulously secluded. Right at the top are the sea view rooms which have gorgeous views of Le Morne and the ocean.
Dinner at Lakaz was a real highlight, being served by super friendly Mauritians who are employed from the local village. I had a Mauritian speciality dish of chicken and prawn curry followed by rum cocktails at the bar in the gardens afterwards.
If you are looking for a place to relax and keep to yourselves for a few days, Lakaz is perfect. You can go on long walks through the stunning gardens, watch the exotic birdlife and hike to the top of the hills where there are breath taking views of the ocean and Le Morne. For yoga enthusiasts they have a yoga platform and scheduled classes – in tranquil surroundings of course!
If you want to get out and explore, take the complimentary bikes and head into Chamarel, a sleepy village about 15 minutes away from the lodge. You can also explore the Seven Coloured Earth, visit the waterfalls and go to the local rum distillery – the rum in Mauritius is usually flavoured with vanilla and is delicious!
