We’re often asked if one week is enough time for a city/beach holiday combo in Asia. Usually, with the long flights and time differences we would say no…longer is better, BUT there is an exception – Malaysia!
With direct flights with British Airways and Malaysia Airlines, you can fly overnight from Heathrow and be in Kuala Lumpur in just 11 hours. Spend 24 hours in this vibrant and exciting city – explore china town, take a trip up to the Petronas Towers, and be sure to have a cocktail at the famous sky bar at Traders Hotel.
For my trip I stayed at the Majestic Kuala Lumpur Hotel which was a real treat! The huge colonial hotel is made up of 2 wings – each different and unique with its own charm. I decided to stay in a room in each of the wings to get a real feel of the whole hotel. Each had huge bathrooms with stand-alone baths (with a TV over the bath!), massive space for some going out drinks, and the comfiest beds imaginable which were perfect after an 11 hour flight.
The buffet at the main restaurant was one of the best I’d ever had, boasting a huge selection for all tastes. Complete with sushi bar, oyster bar, and even a candy floss bar there was plenty to keep you wanting more! As well as the fabulous food, the hotel also offers some fantastic facilities – be sure to have a massage here, you’ll find nothing more relaxing after your long flight. Although perhaps too good – I may have fallen asleep!
After a brilliant and exciting city stop, there was one thing on my mind….the beach!
Why Malaysia works so well for a weeks getaway is not only due to the direct flight. Kuala Lumpur is actually one of the only capital cities in Asia where you can drive from the airport straight to a beach resort in under 3 hours!
Infrastructure in Malaysia is very developed and modern, so a quick motorway drive took us to the harbour to catch a speed boat over to stunning Pangkor Laut – our home for the next 5 nights! When we arrived, we were lucky enough to be upgraded to a Spa Villa – a beautiful, huge stand-alone villa on stilts over the clear blue seas. Perfect!
Pangkor is a really special little island, teeming with charm, character and plenty of things to do. We enjoyed jungle treks, spotted lots of wild animals, took yoga classes on the decking above the sea, went on a sunset boat cruise with canapes and cocktails, and enjoyed barbeques on the beach. And of course made sure I had lots of time to do very little!
Although you are restricted to the island – there is a huge variety of restaurants and other places to eat – Japanese, Italian, Malay, and Western – to name a few! There’s really no excuse not to love the food here!
Whether it’s a peaceful quiet evening, or you are looking for something more lively, you will not be short of evening entertainment. Have a fabulous evening testing out the cocktail menu with the other guests for as long as the bar staff can stay awake to serve you!
Tan topped up and relaxation achieved its back to Kuala Lumpur for one final night. Enjoy some shopping and street food at the Petaling market – a perfect way to finish off a fantastic week.
Then up for your flights home, back in to the office.
A week in Asia – surely not? , Yes, definitely!
