Gokyo Lakes

After hugging my wonderful Sherpa guide I turn around and attempt to take in the most breath-taking view in all my travels. Cascading down the valley are the stunning glacial Gokyo lakes with Ama Dablam (one of the most beautiful mountains in the World) staring me in the eye.

A slight rotation to my left and the most famous mountain trekkers from over the World have come to see – there is no mistaking Everest peeking out. Getting to the top of Gokyo Ri is a challenge, but the view from the top more than rewards your endeavours and the journey is something you will never forget.

You start in Kathmandu, a bustling city full of life, smiling locals and plenty of traffic. The Dwarikas is the perfect place to get away from the city streets and relax into a Mecca of serenity.

The flight into Nepal’s Lukla airport will get your heart pumping, we try to get you seats on the left hand side for the most amazing mountain views. Once in Lukla the real fun begins, we use the best accommodation available on the trek in either the Everest Summit Lodges or Yeti Mountain Lodges.

The Gokyo valley is quieter than it’s more famous Everest counterpart, which means the trails are not as busy, but rest assured you will still have a few meetings with Yaks.

Going on a private trip with just my girlfriend was the perfect way to experience the Himalayas.

Our guide and Sherpa made the experience even more memorable allowing us to rest when we wanted and it allowed us to really get to know the Nepali people on the trail.

A few years on and having returned to Nepal on a number of occasions and trekked through various valleys in the Everest region and beyond, there is still no greater view as that from the top of Gokyo Ri.
